Direct answer
Unclaimed dividends and stock shares are remitted to the state. You can recover them by providing proof of identity and documentation connecting you to the brokerage account or the original stock purchase.
How stocks become unclaimed
If a shareholder moves and fails to update their address with the transfer agent, dividend checks will be returned. After a period of inactivity, both the uncashed dividends and the underlying shares may be turned over to the state.
What happens to the shares?
The state may hold the physical shares for a time, but they are often liquidated (sold) at market value. The cash proceeds from the sale are then held in your name indefinitely.
How to claim your investments
You will need to provide old account statements or dividend stubs as proof. You can file the claim yourself for free. If you need help tracing old corporate mergers or name changes, Oklahoma Estate Finders offers private, optional assistance.
