What to Do With Old Oil and Gas Royalty Checks

    Blog Hero

    Direct answer

If an oil and gas royalty check is too old to cash, the funds have likely been remitted to the Oklahoma State Treasurer. You can claim the funds by proving your identity and your connection to the original address or account.

The lifecycle of a royalty check

Energy companies issue checks regularly. If a check remains uncashed for a specific statutory period (usually a few years), the company is legally required to transfer the funds to the state's unclaimed property division.

    How to claim the funds

Do not throw the old check away. It serves as excellent proof of your claim. To recover the money, you will need to provide the state with a copy of the check, your current ID, and proof that you lived at the address printed on the check.

    Claiming mineral proceeds

You can search the state database and file a claim yourself at no cost. Please note that under Oklahoma law, private asset recovery firms cannot charge a fee for recovering mineral proceeds. Therefore, Oklahoma Estate Finders does not assist with mineral royalty claims or old oil and gas checks. You must claim these directly through the state or consult an attorney.
